Vitamin D: Supporting Blood Sugar & Immune Health

Vitamin D plays an important role in immune function. Low levels have been associated with altered immune responses and may be linked with increased susceptibility to some infections and inflammatory conditions. Chronic, low-grade inflammation is associated with a number of health conditions, including cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes.

Vitamin D & Blood Sugar

Blood sugar is influenced by what we eat, but it is also affected by factors such as physical activity, stress, sleep and vitamin D status. Consistently high blood sugar can impair immune function by reducing the effectiveness of white blood cells, your body's main infection fighters. It also increases inflammation, which can make your immune system work harder than necessary.

Vitamin D is involved in insulin function and glucose metabolism, and maintaining adequate levels may support healthy blood sugar regulation. Increasing your vitamin D levels isn't a replacement for a balanced diet and regular exercise - but it can provide an important factor to help manage blood sugar, reduce inflammation and support immune function.

A few signs that your immune system might need support

  • Feeling unusually tired or run-down

  • Frequent infections

  • Unexplained inflammation, aches or joint discomfort

  • Fluctuating energy levels and difficulty managing stress

Ways to support your immune system

  • Get your vitamin D levels checked if appropriate, particularly if you're at risk of deficiency, so that supplementation can be personalised where needed.

  • Eating vitamin-D containing foods such as oily fish (salmon, mackerel & sardines), eggs and fortified dairy or plant-based alternatives can help support vitamin D intake.

  • A whole-food diet rich in colourful vegetables, lean protein, healthy fats and fibre can help support steadier blood sugar levels and a healthy inflammatory balance.

  • Regular physical activity is important as exercise improves insulin sensitivity and boosts immune function.
