The Gut-Skin Connection
Gut health & acne: what's the connection?
The gut and skin are closely connected through what is known as the gut-skin axis. Emerging research suggests that changes in the gut microbiome and gut health may be associated with acne and other inflammatory skin conditions.
Factors such as stress, diet, alcohol, infections and some medications can influence the gut microbiome and digestive function. Changes in the gut microbiome may influence immune and inflammatory pathways, which are increasingly being studied in relation to skin health.
Poor gut health may also affect nutrient absorption and hormone metabolism, both of which play important roles in skin health. Constipation is also worth addressing, as regular bowel movements are an important part of healthy digestion and elimination. If constipation is persistent, identifying and addressing the underlying cause can be an important part of supporting overall gut health.
Digestive symptoms such as bloating, constipation, reflux, and food sensitivities are often seen alongside chronic skin conditions, highlighting the importance of supporting gut health as part of a holistic approach to acne management.
Natural ways to support the gut-skin connection
Focus on a whole food diet A nutrient-dense, whole food diet provides the building blocks needed for healthy skin repair, balanced hormones, and reduced inflammation. Rather than focusing purely on restriction, aim to include a wide variety of colourful foods rich in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and healthy fats. Include foods rich in zinc and vitamins A & C, as well as omega-3 fatty acids. These nutrients are important for skin health and may help support a healthy inflammatory response. Examples include pumpkin seeds, eggs, carrots, sweet potato, berries, citrus fruits, avocado, olive oil, walnuts and oily fish (salmon, mackerel, sardines). Hydration is often overlooked. Staying well hydrated supports digestion and overall health and helps maintain healthy skin.
Support your gut microbiome A diverse gut microbiome is increasingly associated with overall health, and diet is one of the key ways we can support it. Eating a wide variety of plant foods provides fibre and other compounds that nourish beneficial bacteria. Fermented foods such as sauerkraut, kimchi, kefir and live natural yogurt can also provide live microorganisms.
Choose natural skincare, makeup, and cleaning products The skin is our largest organ and its barrier plays an important role in protecting is from the outside environment. Choosing gentle skincare and avoiding products that irritate or strip the skin can help maintain that barrier. Consider: - Choosing gentle, fragrance-free skincare and makeup where possible.
- Avoiding products that irritate or excessively strip the skin. - Supporting the skin barrier by avoiding overly harsh exfoliants and stripping products.
